REVIEWS OF THE DUCHESS: THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
the cgi was creepy. like, polar-express creepy. the "getting hit by a taxi" sequence of events was really cool, but out of place. i find it hilarious that dakota fanning's little sister was young cate, but they had to re-dub her...and the ADR was fantastically bad. i feel sorry for people who went out to see this when it opened on christmas day, because it's a bit of a downer. i want cate's red dress.

now that that's been seen, i can answer #30 with confidence.
1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?
visited san francisco! saw the rings of saturn through a mighty telescope. "got fired." started playing mandolin. drove through texas, arkansas, and tennesee. recorded voice work. flew home just for visiting. threw my back out. lived without health insurance. ate a bunch of REALLY swanky meals. really appreciated los angeles.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
i didn't make many strong resolutions last year, and it shows. i've already been compiling a list for next year, because i am both determined to make the new year a better one AND too lazy to get going without committing to strong goals.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
i don't think so...i don't really register births as huge events, so i'm sorry if i'm forgetting someone...
4. Did anyone close to you die?
nope.
5. What countries did you visit?
all of them...thanks in part to my vivid imagination and NPR.
6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
i kind of lost my ambition and my creative center. i want that back. i'm making plans to get it back too.
7. What dates from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
the two sad events came in april (job fallout) and october (gabe fallout). the two good were my birthday (observatory date) and thanksgiving (san francisco). unfortunately, the first two had much more impact than the latter.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
finishing the peacock tapestry.
9. What was your biggest failure?
SAG
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
i was really sick over new years last year. i still fear illness. threw my back out in the spring.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
mandolin. although...a new distributor was pretty good too...
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
marta's, for taking me out and making me feel awesome when i was down; more like myself than i'd been in a long time.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
well...gabe, mostly. and, of course, my own. what a sadsack i allowed myself to be.
14. Where did most of your money go?
after the usual bills, a large chunk went into my car.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
san francisco. tenesee road trip. mandolin. moving (didn't happen though).
16. What song will always remind you of 2008?

a) happier or sadder? happier

auditioning.

i was with my uncle and his family.

none, but i often stole over to the apple store for lunchtime trysts.

i think my animosity toward the USPS was already fully established in 2007, so no.

"the good earth" by pearl s. buck

the ting-tings and lenka were my favorite newbies.

mandolin. a good job. a working appreciation of the city.

ipod touch 16G. "harry potter and the half-blood prince" in a theatre near me.

probably "happy-go-lucky."

favorite animated: tie between "wall-e" and "kung-fu panda."
i would also like to give props to "the dark knight," "the orphanage," and "iron man."
and my personal guilty-pleasure props to "speed racer."

gabe took me up to the observatory to a planetarium show and to see the rings of saturn. then we went to the roosevelt for tasty tasty burgers. we had a fight. and i cried about being 32 and realizing my life was not as i'd imagined it to be by that time.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
theatre. or applying myself even remotely to anything more creative.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
business attire and grubs.
34. What kept you sane?
needlework, video games, book club, and new people.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
in my world, it's all alex, all the time.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
sarah palin. q: can we consider her an issue? a: yes. yes we can.

all of my family and MN/WI peeps of course... but i talk to you all here. i guess most of all, i miss david and stephanie, because we don't talk anymore at all.

i was going to say marta, but we technically met last year. so i'm going with malissa. even though we don't work together anymore and i probably will never see her again, she was one of those people that you need to meet in your life to inspire and jostle you.
