"once" is my pick for movie of the year. it won't be up for an oscar. it's not nominated for the globes. with all luck, it will sweep the spirit awards, hopefully they will at least acknowledge the music.
we went to see it when it was in its very limited run, never making it to the big theaters, even though it was one of the most buzzed-about films of the year.
well, it came out on dvd today. gabe bought us a copy, and we just finished it again. it's still as wonderful as the first time, and it's very cozy on the small screen.
it's one of the most perfectly simple movies ever made about a relationship between two people...and not in a hollywood-ending way. not every friendship is definable.
it's 60% music. and that music's good. shot in 17 days, partially improvised, the main two characters are played by musician non-actors, and they shine. hollywood wishes it could be this quiet and simple and hopeful.
