meme stolen from aho:
1. One book that changed your life:
i think we can all agree that the day i picked up "harry potter and the sorcerer's stone" was quite a turning point.
2. One book that you've read more than once:
only one? there are several that i re-read on a regular basis. these being the harry potter and jane austen novels, atwood's "alias grace," "lord of the flies," "the last unicorn" and "the little prince." and every 10 years or so, i come back to the little house books.
3. One book you'd want on a desert island:
"emma."
4. One book that made you laugh:
"a confederacy of dunces." mostly the part where ignatius goes to the movies and yells things at the screen. "RAPE HER!!"
5. One book that made you cry:
"harry potter and the goblet of fire." the speech that dumbledore makes at the end of the year about cedric gets me every fkn time.
6. One book you wish had never been written:
steinbeck's "the pearl." maybe if i'd never read it, i could bring myself to be excited about his other stuff which, i'm told, is much MUCH better.
7. One book you are currently reading:
"before i die" by jenny downham. the reviews were good and i just needed something emotional to stir me after my string of blah reads. this one is a cryer...and i'm sure the end will kill me.
8. One book you've been meaning to read:
"johnathan strange & mr. norrell" by susanna clarke. it's just so BIG. and full of footnotes...which i kind of find fun for a fictional novel. gabe has it in hardcover, but i'm not lugging that mob brick around. i ordered a trade paperback...and it's still the size of my head.
9. One book you finally read after meaning to for a long time:
'1984." not as good as "animal farm."
10. One book that you don't intend to read ever:
probably "ulysses." i know it's the #1 english-language book of all time. but joyce and i have a standing grudge, and every time i try to make up with him and read it, i can tell he still doesn't want me around. so i usually just give up around page 3 or 4.
11. One book you could never finish:
besides the aforementioned "ulysses," i think we've established that "the eyre affair" is not for me.
12. One book you love to gift everybody:
"the little prince," if i can find the white-cover edition. (the new blue-cover edition is a crap piece of translation.) also, "the last unicorn." slam me all you want for that. i love that book.
13. The most boring book you ever managed to finish:
wow. you've just hit into my 2007. since "1984" at least had some neat language and socio-philosophy to work with, i'm going to give this title to "inkheart."
14. Favorite textbook:
it's not TECHNICALLY a textbook, but it should be. "sophie's world" by jostein gaarder is the most comprehensive book on philosophy that i've ever read. because the story is about sophie's education in the world of the philosophers, her story twists and turns metaphysically as she learns about each new philosopher or theory. it's basically a practical guide to the field--in chronological order--using sophie's story to illustrate each thinker's theory. even the most confusing philosophies become clear....i'm constantly amazed by it.
15. What is most challenging for you to read:
long books. i like the feeling of completion and i read slowly. i'm always fooled into thinking i will make it through a large book in a matter of days because it takes a short time to get to the middle. but, once i'm there, it seems to take twice as long to make it to the end of the book. i don't know what that time hole is. someday i'd like to read ken follet's books, or a dostoevsky or two. and cervantes...i'm dying to read "don quixote." but not until i can solve this quantum puzzle. someday.
