does whatever a sphincter can.
Nov. 7th, 2007 09:53 pmrecently, the boy went to a class where julie taymor was the guest speaker. i would have liked to have been there, since i think she's pretty clever. (for those not in the know, julie directed "titus," "frida," and "across the universe." she also designed all the puppets for the stage version of "the lion king," among other amazing stage projects. she's got two tonys and an emmy under her belt, and she's been nominated for an oscar. her design concepts are a joy to look at, even if the dvd is on pause.)
i love her, because of the puppetry and just for the scene with lavinia in "titus" where she's all branchy. the boy doesn't like her, because he found "frida" to be a very lifeless telling of kahlo's story. but he recognizes that he's basing his opinion on one movie.
we both agree that she has the talent in her to re-define broadway. she could turn the place on it's damn ear, single-handedly. but gabe has lost what tiny, little faith he had in her abilities when she revealed her next big stage extravaganza:
"spiderman, the musical."
yeah, i'm sure she'll do wonders with the fly system and the comic-book layout. and i agree that part of julie's brilliance as an artist is to use whatever randomness strikes her fancy at the moment, A.D.D.-style; plunge into our pop-culture world and not only make it wonderful, but to show herself as a product of her time.
but i will admit. i'm a little embarrassed to be a fan of hers right now.
spiderman?
the MUSICAL???
*sigh*
julie. why.
