family and friends.
Jul. 31st, 2006 11:16 amfriday: gabe left and it wasn't so bad. he'll be back tomorrow! siri's birfday party at the chatterbox was much fun, and included a very sweet gift from kris: stationary with which to write my boy.
saturday: drove down to my folks. jo brought the boys over and they spent most of the time in the batman slip-n-slide. they were anxious to tell me that, for halloween, noah (5) and jack (3) are going to be darth vader and a ninja respectively. they are going to be the coolest boys ever. and noah's on a toddler soccer team, the "bluegills." yet another man in my life on the soccer field. excellent. jo is doing fine, on the proper meds, and starting to love herself again. i'm so happy. mom and i went to see "lady in the water."
REVIEWS OF THE DUCHESS: LADY IN THE WATER.
all my favorite directors get one strike. but i'm not puttin m. night's strike on this one. true. it's not a good film. but i still liked it. not enough to buy or watch ever again, but still liked it.
the story is really clunky and m. is in the film too much ('though, he is nice to look at. what. he's got good hair in this one). the dialogue is a bit more tell-than-show for my like (see the final astma scene in "signs"), but oh well. my major guffs with the film lie in the fact that (probably because he spent too much time on the wrong side of the lens) m.'s camera work is not up to the standard of what i've come to love about him. that, and the movie kept relying on "you made the wrong choice" convention, and i got bored with that. i love bryce, but her character was pathetic and she's capable of more than just staring innocently at everyone. give her some lines dammit; girl can act.
other than that, there are some nice moments dealing with the vessel's future and how he deals with it, and giamatti's character coming to terms with his past. i also liked the central theme: purpose. (if you know my love affair with m. night, then you know i love him for his themes. "signs" = faith. "village" = leadership. "sixth sense" = forgiveness. "unbreakable" = balance.) and, personally, a film about one's purpose in life was exactly what i needed to see, therefore it touched me a little deeper than it might some.
there's no twist. there's not much plot. it's as he said, a bedtime story. and for that, it was just fine by me.
end review.
sunday: spent some time with jo, and then dinner with dad talking about my future. i will save those issues for another time, but it's always good to talk to the realist in my father. then back to the cities.
REVIEWS OF THE DUCHESS: THE FUTUREHEADS (rock concert)
what can i say? if you're a fan, you know how wonderful and fun they are. if you're not, there's not much i can do to convince you. but, if you're curious for a listen, pick up their first album. it's the better one and more indicitave of their quirky style.
lots of banter and silliness, they refered to the varsity as looking like a whore house (!), and played a grand set, concluding with an audience participation version of their much-applauded cover of "hounds of love." i hounds of love them. so there.
opening band--maps of norway--was okay, but the singer was a bit annoying. she was doing this spazzy/cutsie-girl routine that just seemed put on and pissed me off. i couldn't even watch her, but the drummer was cute and the guitarist was good, so i focused on them.
after the concert, they put on the hockey night album, and that made me happy...and homesick for gabe (they're his fav local band--apparently, they opened for CYHSY on their european tour).
that's not a great music review, but it's what i have energy for. suck it.
one last thing: before the concert, i used a blue sharpie to write "dumb" on my hand, which was appropriate, because i sweat like a bitch and rubbed my sweaty face with my sweaty hand and spent most the concert against the stage at the futurehead's feet with a big blue moustache! wonk wonk wonk...that's our amber!
end.
that's all i gots. here. have this.
1.Are you named after anyone? If so, explain.
nope. but my dad's mom had two middle names and jo and i both got one for ours.
2. Do you have your children's names picked out already? If so, is there any significance?
no. i like certain names, but whether i'd name my children those things, i have no idea. it's not something i sit around and think about. i don't think i'd use my family's names...i'm not fond of any of them. (the names, i mean. the family's just fine.)
3. If you were born a member of the opposite sex what would your name have been?
brandon.
4. If you could re-name yourself what name would you pick and why?
i wouldn't rename myself. i've grown into this name and i like it. the only thing i ever concidered changing was my middle name--kay--to just K, because "amber kay" sounds hick to my ears. just using the initial... that way they'd be the same, but not. but then i found out it was my grandma's, and i lost interest in changing it.
5. Are there any mispronunciations/typos that people do w/ your name constantly?
just the last name. most strangers say "bork." i've also gotten "bo-jark." but now that the singer is so popular, most people know how to say it. however, now i have to put up with nobs asking me if i'm related or icelandic. dumb.
