Writer's Block: Raining cats or dogs?

i've had so many discussions about this lately, it's hilarious.
the thing is, i prefer dogs. i grew up with them, and i understand them better. however, i prefer it if a dog isn't stinky or bitey or a poodle. i love animals like crazy and i like playing with them, snuggling them, and running around like crazy with them. dogs do all of this.
cats, on the other hand, will sometimes do all of this. i mean, you can't run around the yard with them, and only some of them will let you snuggle them--and only a small percentage of THOSE will let you get away with it for as long as you'd like--and then they have this awful habit of telling you they've had enough of you by inflicting bodily harm (whereas a dog will generally just wiggle free). that's not to say there aren't dogs that won't bite or scratch you. but you can train that out of a dog. cats that bite and scratch never seem to grow out of that.
when dogs look at you, they read your facial expressions. they know if you're about to scold them or love them, they know if you're playing wait-and-pounce or are about to entice them with food or a walk. cats don't see this. cats watch and listen to what you're doing and if it concerns/benefits them in some way. their brains are motion-minded, while dogs just seem a little more human because they pick up on our instinctual emotional indicators and respond in like. i don't think that dogs are any less selfish than cats, but they're better at giving the illusion that they do really care about you all the time and are really happy to see you and be around you for your company and not just for the heat you radiate. but then, that's the pack-animal thing coming out too.
however. cats are usually quieter. they're easier to care for and can sometimes just take care of themselves. they soothe while dogs energize.
but i have to say cats win on the gross factor. sure, a dog will scoot and lick his balls and lay down nasty farts, but i've seen cats do all of this too. but cats? they walk around in their own poop and then come walk on you. that's yick. the only thing dogs do that can compare is rolling in stuff. but at least when they do it, they don't come over and roll on you afterward.
basically, i love love love them both. and i'm about to be living with a cat (my first time) and i'm really excited about having a warm fuzzy animal stalking around the place. but i just get along better with dogs, and i forgive them more easily for their wrongs. i can't help but smile when a puppy comes at me all licky-chops and wiggle-butt.
but then, there's also very few joys like having a cat run over to rub their head on your legs and purr.
