so i'm watching torchwood now (just got through season one--omg, loved the ending of the finale), and i think owen's a creep. i mean, yeah, his character is, as gwen says, "a bit of a tosser," but there was something about him that really got to me and i couldn't figure out what it was.
and then i placed it. he's played by burn gorman whom i loved to hate as the snivvley little weasel mr. guppy in the glorius masterpiece theatre's production of bleak house.
and it made me think how first impressions go a long, long way to making you anticipate or recoil from an actor on screen.
par example: juliet stevenson. she's brilliant and wonderful, but it took me the longest time to think so because i was first aware of her as the tedious mrs. elton in emma. then someone told me i had to watch truly madly deeply...and i just couldn't handle it. she's the romantic lead, going through the loss of her boyfriend (played by the lovely alan rickman), and i just couldn't relate to her.
and as much as i love the helena bonham carter twelfth night, i was completely in hate with viola, without understanding why. and then i realized that the actress who played the role was lucy in sense and sensibility, the biggest austen shit ever.
the opposite applies; if i notice an actor for the first time in a role i love, i tend to hang on to my love for them. the professional was so amazing, but i should have given up on natalie portman long long long before i actually did.
and sometimes, i avoid movies altogether if it stars an actor i like in a role i don't. this is why i probably won't see the lovely bones. i love stanley tucci too much.
as an actress i feel like i should know better. but then, having lived there and been privy to its effect on the human race, i acknowledge hollywood as being an evil trickster that rips your heart away from your head and throws them each into a separate pile and tells you to choose.
