the 30 day meme: day 22

i like sublime stitching: http://www.sublimestitching.com/patterns/all
whenever i'm stressed out, i like to go look at the patterns. sublime stitching encompasses everything i like in embellishment embroidery: kitchy designs and the freedom to stitch badly.
i once took a class from jenny hart. she's the hardass, bettie-page lookin' gal that started sublime stitching, and one of my personal heroes. her mom got really really sick (i believe it was the cancer) and she spent a lot of time bedside. during that time, she needed something to do with her hands and some older ladies came and plunked cloth and needle and thread in them and taught her how to sew.
and became addicted to it.
during her workshop, she explains all of this. she also talks about the art of embroidery and how, if you're skilled, the back should look as pretty as the front. she then shrugs her shoulders and says, "but if it keeps you from sewing, fk it." she basically gives you liscence to just do it, worry free, devilmaycare if it comes out pretty or not, back OR front. just do. it's totally empowering. "your grandma may turn it over and say, that's nice dear, but it's not really embroidery. and that's when you smile politely and take your hoop into another room and stab at the cloth with your needle rather than her eyes." i love her.
i couldn't even talk to her during the workshop. i would have said stupid fangirl things. that's right. i am nerdy enough to be an ultrafan of an embroidery queen.
anyway. she started the company from scratch, and it is owned and maintained soley by friends and family members. she's a permanent fixture in most national craft fairs and is a cornerstone in the modern DIY movement. she gathers some really cool designers to put together patterns for the site. if you order a kit, it will come with floss, a needle, and a tea towel. she gets her towels from a specific fair trade company in india because she likes the weight. and the needles are a specific size, one that is near impossible to find an entire package of (it's usually the one in the middle of the multi-pack) but that she prefers to all others because it's the perfect guage for 6-ply (the normal ply of a full strand of embroidery floss). it's a little like nirvana.
it's on my 101 list to order something from her site. it doesn't sound like a "life goal," but these patterns make me so happy and i've been wanting to order some forever. the only reason i have not: i can't decide. i want them all. it's very tragic.
at her workshop, we got a free tea towel kit to stitch during the class. mine was the owl from the forest friends kit. embroidery, jenny hart, AND an owl? it was indeed sublime. i rarely use any other towel in my kitchen now.
