weekend update: shhhhmorrrrgassssboard
Feb. 2nd, 2009 09:59 amFRIDAY: picked up mcdonald's and headed over to a friends place where a bunch of us watched "mac & me." basically, right after "E.T." came out, coca-cola and macdonalds produced a rip-off movie. all the same things happen. alien seperated from family, takes up with with young boy who has trouble convincing his single mom and older brother of said aliens existence. government comes looking for alien. hijinks ensue. aliens get sick, aliens get better, aliens are reunited. happy ending.
only, instead of a bicycle chase at night, the main boy is wheelchair bound and they race around on that. instead of a little sister, there's a next-door neighbor girl. instead of dressing the alien in a ghost costume, they dress him up in a hollowed out teddy bear. instead of reeces pieces, there's skittles. and instead of going back to mars (yes, the aliens are from mars, they were sucked up by an earth exploration machine), they get sworn in as american citizens.
and just in case you forgot that coke and mcd's were sponsors, the kids save the sick aliens by feeding them coke and there's a huge, rediculous dance sequence in the mcdonalds. yeah, you read that right. if any of you remember kids incorporated or the new mickey mouse club, that's pretty much it.
if you want to further be amused in that "can't stop staring way," go here. there's even a clip.

it will be a long time before i eat mcd's again. ugh.
SATURDAY
chinese new year parade in chinatown!!!! (pics to come) basically two hours of the same five things:
-city councilpersons in vintage cars
-high school marching bands
-lovely aisan women in tiaras on fancy floats
-martial arts schools (very few of which had any asians)
-dragon dance troupes with long dragons
but it was fun anyway, especially with all the kids throwing firecrackers around. we filled up on shrimp dim sum, BBQ pork steamed buns, spring rolls, mochi ice cream, and the garliciest shrimp and bok choi dish ever. half the city was there, and it was a par. tay.
SUNDAY
went to ikea to buy a better computer desk for gabe. thank god. the other one was a monster. however, that means until he sells the monster, we now have even more furnature plugging up the place. plus, everything that was in our bathroom is now in our living room because the plasterers are coming today.
oh. i failed to mention that i came home friday evening and opened the closet in our bathroom only to find a HUGE GAPING HOLE and mesh and plaster everywhere. seems the plumbers had been working next door and didn't realize the wall they smashed through to work on pipes belonged to another apartment. our apartment. all of our sheets and towels are covered with plaster and pipe guck and are gross and damp.
so. although the weekend was fun and games, the week will be full of laundry for me. joy.
