last night was a rare evening where both of us had no commitments, so derek and i headed off to a nice dinner. sushi at masu and ice cream at izzy's.
i've been wanting to try masu forever and it was nice to be able to do so. but. is it bad that i'd rather have my sushi tasty than sustainable? because masu's selection was wanting and their tuna was...not great. and it's hard to mess up tuna. because their selection lacked a lot of our favorites, we decided to try some new things. the clam had great texture but tasted of nothing, and the snapper had a tiny more flavor, but still not enough to overcome the rice. the sea eel, while just as tasty as its more common counterpart, had none of its texture and my tongue went right through it like an over boiled potato. the sweet shrimp nigiri though, THAT's where it's at. i'd eat more of that. and, as i've said, the dynamite roll did not live up to its name because the tuna was lacking. ah well. i will always hold that all sushi is superior to almost any other meal, even if it underwhelms.
to make up for the slight disappointment, we wanted ice cream. derek had never been to izzy's and i haven't been there in several years. so off to the shoppe.
let me tell you something about swedish garden party ice cream. it is a delicious base of elderberry ice cream with raspberry swirl and ginger cookie bits. and it is best paired with graham cracker ice cream and an izzy (the tiny scoop they include atop all orders) of cream cheese ice cream. HOLY BALLS.
