Oct. 8th, 2009 09:56 amyou know what? i'm as entertained by a staged reading as i am by a performance. sometimes even more so. this may be why i love first read throughs. sure, no action is going on, but you still get to watch actors' faces as they emote through the script, and after that, it's all your imagination. it's like live bedtime storytelling. next time, i'm bringing a blanket.
this comes from attending pro rata's reading of "kitty kitty kitty" last night. i'm not even going to touch on the play itself other than to say that i don't think it can stand alone, as hilarious as it is. but i'm so glad i got to go to the reading. reading it on the page is one thing, but it sinks in so much better when andy is clowning it up or natalie is being snarky or grant is actually blathering in botardation.
and i like participating in them as well (i will be reading elizabeth I in next week's reading of "mary stuart"), because it's like acting lite. an acting snack. you can read it on your own as much as you like, but once you get all the other actors in a room and hear the characters come out of their voices and attitudes, it's always surprising how much more life there is in the script.
if i had stayed in L.A. and been happy, i totally would have persued voice acting. i did do some good research. don't get me wrong, i love being on stage. it's my home. but there's something nice about divorcing your body and appearance now and then. you get to play roles you normally wouldn't (elizabeth, par example...i'm too young for her right now, and not quite type). and you get to explore the act of listening without distraction.
i'd love to have a playreading club. just a bunch of people who get together once a month. a play is selected and sent out ahead and everyone who wants to try can throw their name in two hats--one for boys, one for girls--and we just pick for parts and then read. that's a good saturday night. but good luck trying to pin down a bunch of actors for something so...studious. you'd have to bribe them with beer and popcorn and cookies. so, i guess pro rata is one step ahead on that.
