sorry, for some reason, lj is posting me weird. i don't know if it showed up the first time, but i'm posting it again just in case.

aw, poor gabe. he tore his ass off, running around L.A. looking for a nice apartment that would make me happy, and i'm sure, in that first night, he went to bed feeling like he had failed.

morning DID make everything better.

regarding the a/c:
we realized, during the day, that we're up above all the surrounding buildings. we're above the heat and, since we're in the corner (you can see our apartment in the picture(previous post), fourth floor, 3 windows on the right corner) and windows on both sides, we get a nice cross breeze. so it's never very hot in here. therefore, we're good without it. and it's just the right temp for rico. gabe and i prefer the breeze to aircon anyway, so it's perfect.

regarding the roaches:
first i must explain that our fridge wasn't working properly either. we had to keep eggs and such in the freezer just to keep it cool. so it was my job the other day to go down and tell the manager that the brand new fridge was on the blink.

sidenote, regarding our manager:
brent is a sweetheart. our age. very eager to please and get it done right. for those who remember lem mcdermott, brent could pass for his twin in appearance and mannerisms, down to the overactive saliva gland. with longer hair. he's pretty awesome.

back to the roaches:
so brent says he'll call the owner (which he does) and that guy will come up personally and fix the fridge the next day (which he does). (the owner is a very very energetic man in his early 50's, native korean, stern, but nice). and, as a cast off, i ask brent if he has any suggestions about roach control.

actually gabe and i took it in stride and got some bait traps. i mean, 1. L.A. 2. koreatown 3. 1920's building yeah. roaches should be expected. we decided to call them "las cucarachas" because it makes it cuter. (untill you see one in your cupboard. and then even a name can't save them.)

but brent looks concerned and says, "you have roaches?" yes. i just figured... "oh no, we take that very seriously." and then bam, he's on the phone.

the head maintenance man, todd, is standing there, and he explains how this building is solid concrete. fireproof. earthquake proof. and, completely solid and therefore shouldn't house roaches. however, they do get into the units and live in the cupboards. it's a unit by unit basis. they ordered an exterminator...he should be here today (although i am still waiting and will be pissed if he doesn't show up because everything in my kitchen is taking up room in my living room, aside a big box with a newly-delivered couch in it and rico's upstairs alone in an empty apartment to wait out the spray).

regarding todd:
a man i thought siri would love to have a chat with. man's an aussie, been to 54 countries, just came back from norway where he's walked over the arctic circle, and is planning a trip to antartica to walk over the circle there. nuts, i tell you. everywhere. had a million stories, i must have talked to him for half an hour. but then again, everyone here's from somewhere else. brent's from massachusets by way of chicago, another dude i met on the street today lived in north dakota after guatemala, and a girl in my building from chicago was telling me about another from new york. crazy!

regarding the building:
it's more pleasant in the daytime. it's bright and clean and open. the neighborhood is friendly and amazingly diverse: i went out this morning to get a money order for rent and exchanged good mornings in three different languages. four, if you count jive. yeah, i wouldn't want to walk around alone at night, and it's not a pretty street. but the cross street is clean and lined with palm trees and, on the clearer days, yes, you can see the hollywood sign. gabe and i find that lucky. and hey, plenty of authentic barbecue, burritos, and kimchi within walking distance. not to mention, the 7eleven's remade into kwikeemarts for the "simpsons movie" release, including donuts, squishees, and mid-east clerks i shit you not.

hee!
