REVIEWS OF THE DUCHESS #123: MARCH OF THE PENGUINS

oh. mygod. if this movie comes to your town, you need to see it. it's not more than any doc you'd see on nova or the discovery channel, but it has a lot more heart. i actually had to ask people to go with me so i wouldn't look a freak 29-year old squealing at emperor penguins in a theatre by herself.

the uptown was packed, and the people lined up around the corner for this cutefest. and, as people do at the uptown when gathered for a mutual affection for the subject on display, there was applause at the end for these awesome creatures that go all out to hatch one chick a year. can i just say...it's a good thing these birds have little to no natural predators, because they aren't made for running. hell. they aren't made for walking...but they do. for more than 100 miles at a time. holy crap. (that is, when they're not using their feet to push themselves along on their bellies. *squeeeeeeeee!!!*)

kudos to the french bastards who spent their time getting amazingly beautiful and hilarious footage (you get to witness them doing their work during the end credits), and to morgan freeman, narrator extraordinaire.

i did laugh, out loud and often. and i did come close to tears a couple of times. but mostly, it was squealing. silently, and rocking back and forth with my fists crammed in my face...but still squealing. just go.
